An honest caveat: A card communicates your needs clearly, but it can’t guarantee a safe meal on its own. You still need willing, careful staff — always confirm how a dish is prepared, and watch for cross-contamination.

  • Show the card to your server and ask them to share it with the kitchen.
  • Point to the cross-contamination line — shared fryers, pans, and surfaces are the biggest risk.
  • Keep the card on your phone and printed, so a dead battery never leaves you stuck.

How do I use a translation card at a restaurant?

Show the card in the right language to your server and ask them to share it with the kitchen, where your food is actually prepared. Point especially to the cross-contamination part — that’s where most mistakes happen. Keep it on your phone and printed, since phones die at the worst moments.

Are the translations accurate, and who checked them?

Each card was written using the medical terminology that national celiac associations use in their own materials, and the key terms — celiac disease, gluten, wheat, barley, rye, oats, and cross-contamination — were verified per language. Every card also shows an English version so you can see exactly what it says before you hand it over.

Which languages are included?

Six of the most-traveled languages: French, Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese, and Portuguese. Spanish covers Spain and Latin America, and Portuguese covers both Portugal and Brazil, so the set works across much of the world.

Will a card guarantee my meal is safe?

No card can promise that, and it’s important to be honest about it. A card communicates your needs clearly and is a huge help, but you still need willing, careful staff. Always confirm out loud, ask how the dish is prepared, and when in doubt, fall back on naturally gluten-free whole foods.
